Here versus there
This is such an amazing topic because it forces us to focus on what is going on right here, right now. So much of our time is spent lost in daydreaming as well as unnecessary mental chatter. We live in a state of constant comparison and judgment. If someone else has achieved it than we feel envy. If we achieved it, it mustn’t have been that difficult because it’s accomplished.
We’re always trying to arrive at a new point. For the purpose of this blog I will call them simply, … ‘A’ & ‘B’. We are at ‘A’ and if we could just get to ‘B’ then we’d FINALLY be happy. So along comes the day that we arrive at ‘B’ and guess what? … ‘B’ becomes the new ‘A’ . Our enjoyment of the achievement is short-lived. And because the elation doesn’t last long enough we decide we need a new ‘B’, a new place to get to so we can FINALLY be happy.
For many of us, this cycle perpetuates throughout our lives with little or no recognition on our part. We almost seem trapped in a state of wanting more and never really enjoying what we have mastered as well as how truly comfortable we live. If you are reading this right now, you are one of the fortunate ones. Millions of people are without drinking water, shelter and food: the basics for sustaining life.
So the next time you get thinking that you’ll be happy when you arrive “there,” try to remember how good you have it “here.”
What we focus on is what we create. Adapting a focus on gratitude keeps our heart grateful. And a grateful heart is a happy heart!
Enjoy your “A” today!
